Lower emissions in car interiors with improved BASF polyether polyols

BASF has now improved theáprocess forámanufacturing Lupranol« (polyether polyol) soáthatácar components which are made ofáBASF polyurethane systems emit anáaverage ofá20ápercent less aldehyde. This allows automotive suppliers, thatámanufacture e.g. acoustic parts, seats andásteering wheels oráback-foam instrument panels andádoors, toámeet theáincreasing requirements ofácar manufacturers andátheálaw forálower emissions (VOCs: Volatile Organic Compounds) inávehicle interiors. Following theáprocess change atáBASFĺs Asian production sites atátheábeginning ofá2017, theámodification is now being made ináEurope andáwillátake place inátheáUS plants duringátheácourse ofáthis year. Alongside isocyanate, polyoláis theástarting product forápolyurethane foamásystems.

Theáemissions have been optimized byáimproving theácleaning andáfinishing processes ofáLupranol« inásucháaáway thatátheámechanicaláproperties ofátheámaterialáremain unchanged duringátheáfollowing foamáandáprocessing steps. This means thatátheácurrently used Lupranol« grades can be exchanged immediately, there is no need foráelaborate tests orárenewed approvals ofátheáPU systems which are based onáthese improved polyolágrades. BASF markets theáPU systems foráflexible, semi-rigid andáintegraláfoams underátheátrademarks Elastoflex« W, Elastoflex« E andáElastofoam« I.

Withátheáimproved Lupranol« grades BASF contributes toáautomotive components witháever lower emissions. Completed parts made ofáBASF PU systems are tested internally asáwelláasábyácertified test laboratories like Imat-Uve andáInstitut Fresenius. Theáimprovement ofátheáemission values varies fromápart toápart: Anáaverage reduction ofá20ápercent is possible, measured according toácommonly accepted chamber test methods like VDA276áandáBMW GS 97014ľ3.

Governments aroundátheáworld are continuously demanding lower emissions forávehicle interiors ináorder toáreduce theápossible impact ofávolatile substances onátheáhealth ofácar drivers, butáalsoátoálessen theátypical new-car smell. Theáfocus is currently onáaldehydes sucháasáformaldehyde, acetaldehyde andápropionaldehyde, asáwelláasáaromatics fromápolyurethanes. BASF is working intensively onádeveloping PU systems which allow forácar components withálower emissions.
